Bringing Hydroelectric Power to Pueblo
The Pueblo Board of Water Works wanted to leverage the high pressure of water flowing into the city’s water treatment plant by purchasing two hydro turbines, which once installed, would capture the water’s energy on-site, generate electricity, and then return the water to its normal treatment process.
ICM was hired to install the hydro turbines and its associated equipment, which were placed in parallel to the existing pressure-dissipation plumbing, enabling the old valves to still be used if the facility needs supplemental flow, or if the turbines need to be taken down for maintenance.
ICM excavated and built the foundation, which consisted of over 650 yards of concrete. We constructed a pre-engineered building to house and protect the equipment, which served as the central hub for the hydroelectric power generation system. The building had to be erected and temperature heat needed to be used before the turbines and generators could be installed in the building.
Crane plans were developed to install the turbines, along with a generator, exciter, control system, and Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) all through roof hatches designed in the building. This was followed by the installation of all the associated piping, strainers, butterfly valves, actuators, and large bore process piping.
This project provided a significant benefit to the people of Pueblo in the form of continued water supply, mixed with new power generation, at a time when both resources are being strained.
ICM Wins Gold ACE Award
We’re proud to have won Gold in the AGC ACE Awards for our project “Overhauling the Car Shredder at the Evraz Steel Recycling Plant.” Congrats to our team members for their hard work on this project!
ICM overhauled the car shredder, a 600k pound piece of equipment, at Evraz Recycling. The concrete foundation the shredder sits on had weakened and was in need of repair. In only 29 days, we demoed the shredder and its foundation and rebuilt the entire thing, putting the shredder back together in the exact same sequence we removed it in.
#11 on ENR Mountain States Top Regional Specialty Contractor List
ENR Mountain States released their Top Regional Specialty Contractor list and we are #11 on the list! We were also ranked #2 for structural steel and #4 for concrete.
Our executive vice president Jamie Hodges spoke to ENR about the “wait and see” mentality a lot of firms have right now since some projects are on hold due to market uncertainty. At ICM, we’re taking the time to strengthen internal processes and training so we can hit the ground running in the new year. Read more here.
