The Situation
Richard came to Rocky Mountain Driveline after replacing a U-joint on his own vehicle. Shortly afterward, he noticed a persistent creaking noise when driving. Unsure of the cause, he sent a video to our team to help identify the problem — but the source wasn’t immediately clear.
The Inspection
Richard brought his vehicle in late in the afternoon, around 4:00 p.m. Our technician assisted him by removing the driveshaft and carefully inspecting the U-joint assembly. At first, nothing appeared out of place. The driveshaft was reinstalled, but during Richard’s test drive, the same creaking sound returned.
The Discovery
Determined to find the root cause before the end of the day — especially knowing Richard had two young kids in daycare and couldn’t return the next day — our technician helped him remove the driveshaft again. This time, the team replaced the U-joint entirely and reinstalled it.
That solved the problem. Upon closer inspection, it turned out that the issue was caused by over-torqued straps on the U-joint. The excessive torque had crushed the needle bearings, preventing them from rotating smoothly around the trunnion.
The Result
Once the new U-joint was installed correctly, the noise disappeared completely. Richard left that evening both relieved and deeply appreciative that the team stayed late to make sure his vehicle was fixed right — and that he could get back to his family without having to return the next day.
